If You are a Victim of Domestic Violence:
- Request an Emergency Protective Order (EPO). An EPO is a temporary order for protection issued by the police officer responding to your call for help. He or she can request an EPO from a judge any time of the day or night. An EPO is in effect for 5 business days or 7 calendar days. When you have an EPO, you will need to file for a temporary restraining order before the EPO expires.
- Find a safe place to stay or contact a domestic violence shelter for help. Safety Plan
- To obtain a temporary restraining order, call the Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) for a domestic violence service provider in your area. Or, you may call the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
- Do not have any in-person or telephone contact with your batterer.
